Thyroid hormone & mineral supplements -- important to take at different times

Do you take Thyroid hormone? A lot of people do and may not know the proper way to take it.

Most everyone that is taking thyroid knows to take it in the morning on an empty stomach
30-60 minutes before breakfast.  But do you also know that if you are taking high-dose calcium, iron or magnesium you should take them in the evening away from when you take your thyroid medication?

These minerals, when taken in high doses, can bind onto thyroid hormone and render it less effective.  I usually recommend people to take these at night with dinner.

If you are taking a regular multi-vitamin then you can take that in the morning with breakfast because usually the amount of calcium, magnesium and iron in those pills is not high enough to cause problems.  But if you are anemic and needing extra iron or extra calcium for your bones then take those supplements at night.  Plus when you take your calcium/magnesium at night you will sleep better because magnesium helps relax your muscles.
